Ariike Ruban
Ariike Ruban’s design studio is in the heart of Brixton in South West London. Ariike's designs are versatile, unique and playful. Ari is a Nigerian born British
designer whose roots are very much steeped in the textile tradition of her Yoruba culture: Her grandmother was a textile merchant and her mother a
dressmaker. Ari grew up in the splendour and rich colours, textures and designs
of the Yoruba Aso Oke, the easy, andregal structure of Yoruba clothes and a rich and colourful recycling and upcycling tradition.
Ari brings all that history and experience to her designs. Ari's starting point is always the fabrics she collects from local sources. Fabrics inform her design, and thus she is
able to create a landscapes of colours, textures and movements. Her designs are
no restricted by form. All her designs are conceptualized and handmade in her studio in London.
We are different
Boho Dresses and Tops
Our Boho Collection is individually handmade in our studio, made with remnant pieces of linen, organdie, printed cotton, silk, and upcyled
denim. It is a handmade collection and the pieces of fabric are sourced and painstakingly assembled by Ariike. "It's a real joy to work on this collection because they are all one offs and so I take my time to create each dress."
Reworked Levi's 501
The vintage Levi's 501 is reworked and redesigned into a pair of wide
leg jeans. The reworked 501 is assembled from 2 pairs of jeans with a patchwork of used denim, remnant denim pieces, waxed cloth, and African cotton prints (Ankara).
How do we do it? We start off with a pair of vintage men's 501. We disassemble the pair of 501 by hand, concentrating on the areas of stress in the crotch areas. We redesigned the legs of these and use a second pair of jeans, remnant denim, wax cloth and print to create the
new design that you have in the picture.
This is a one-off pair for men and women.
